Bishops Olson, Farrell address unaccompanied immigrant children crisis in joint press conference

Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas and Bishop Michael Olson of Fort Worth discussed the collective response of local Catholics to the Texas border crisis and appealed for more volunteer attorneys to represent unaccompanied minor children in immigration court during a joint press conference held July 21 in Dallas.

As Catholic leaders voiced their concern for the more than 57,000 unaccompanied minor children who entered the U.S. since October 2013, Governor Rick Perry announced plans to deploy 1,000 National Guard troops to curb the flow of immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

FORT WORTH — Sister Mary Dorothy Powers still remembers in vivid detail her first day as a Sister of St. Mary of Namur.

And, according to Sr. Dorothy and fellow jubilarians, Sister Devota Sweeney (75 years), Sister Mary Elaine Breen (60 years), Sister Jane Conway (60 years), Sister Joan Markey (60 years), and Sister Mary Jean Warmuth (60 years), it’s a life full of purpose, new challenges, and service to God.

El tiempo ordinario en el vocabulario de la Iglesia no refiere a lo que pensemos. No es simplemente el tiempo común que pase antes de que volvamos a celebrar el nacimiento del Señor y, entonces, sus grandes actos de la salvación. I recently went on a mission trip with some college students to Moore, Oklahoma. We spent the week building fences for people whose homes had been destroyed as the result of an F5 tornado in May of 2013. We were there a week before the one-year anniversary of that devastating storm. Many things that week made a strong impression on me, but the biggest impression came in an unexpected moment.
