LORETTO, PA. -- Brother Andrew Joseph Sanchez of Grapevine was received as a Novice of the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular, Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, on May 29. In a ceremony held during Evening Prayer at St. Francis Friary at Mount Assisi, Loretto, Pennsylvania, Br. Andrew, TOR, was given the Franciscan Habit of Probation— a symbol of his desire to be specifically formed in Franciscan spirituality and prayer.

FORT WORTH -- On Sunday May 31, Bishop Michael Olson ordained Fray Pedro Romero Gutierrez, OFM Cap, as the newest priest in the diocese, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Fort Worth. Father Romero is a member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin within the Mexico-Texas Vice-Province, also known as the Capuchin Franciscans.

Lori Chalupny asked the Holy Redeemer School fourth- and fifth-graders. The youngsters responded by quickly taking to the field at Nerinx Hall High School in Webster Groves, organized into groups for shooting, dribbling, and passing drills. Chalupny is a midfielder with the U.S. women's national soccer team competing in the World Cup this month.

Pro-life group calls federal court ruling on Texas law "a sweeping victory for women"

NEW ORLEANS (CNS) -- Americans United for Life said a federal court ruling holding up most restrictions on abortion in Texas was "a sweeping victory for women." The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans upheld most provisions in a law that supporters of legal abortion say is an effort to block access to abortion in the state.

Franciscan Friars of the Renewal say goodbye after eight years in diocese

FORT WORTH -- After eight years of dedicated service to the homeless on the East Side of Fort Worth, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal closed their Sacred Heart of Jesus Friary doors at the end of May and ventured to new areas to continue their mission. The Friars operated St. Benedict’s Mission on Cypress Avenue in a small building rented from the nearby Presbyterian Night Shelter.
