Father Richard Beaumont, a parish priest for more than 50 years, and pastor of St. Bartholomew for nearly half of his career, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, in his sleep.

Fr. Beaumont was born Jan. 20, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio to Albert and Duffy Beaumont. He attended St. Gregory College Seminary in Cincinnati from 1949 to 1952, and Mount St. Mary’s Seminary from 1952 to 1958, and was ordained to the priesthood for what was then the Diocese of Dallas-Fort Worth by Archbishop Edward Hoban of Cleveland on May 24, 1958.

He served at Sacred Heart Parish in Texarkana 1958-62, St. Cecilia Parish in Dallas in 1962, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Dallas 1962-64, on the faculty of Holy Spirit Minor Seminary 1964-66, as associate pastor of Sacred Heart Parish and chaplain and a teacher at Notre Dame School in Wichita Falls 1966-68, and administrator of St. Theresa Mission in Olney 1968-69, St. Jude Parish in Burkburnett 1969-73, associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish 1973-77, pastor of St. Paul Parish in Electra 1977-80, and at St. Bartholomew Parish from 1980 until his retirement in 2003.

Fr. Beaumont was known for publishing pamphlets about various topics of the faith and embracing technology of the time by recording his homilies and making them available on audio cassette tapes.

"We are all called to minister to God's people. We all are called to share the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, with those who don't know," wrote Fr. Beaumont in a pamphlet titled "Jesus changed my life just like that," detailing a time when he was feeling discouraged after being ordained 13 years. In the pamphlet, Fr. Beaumont describes how two priest friends prayed over him, and he felt Jesus tell him he loved him. "I sensed that this was what it was all about, so I went back to work and began to speak to people about Jesus Christ, and their lives began to change."

The Funeral Vigil for Fr. Richard Beaumont will be celebrated on Thursday, January 17,  at 7 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 3601 Altamesa Blvd., Fort Worth.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated the following day,  Friday, January 18, at  2 p.m. at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1206 Throckmorton St., Fort Worth.
