Statement on the Election of Pope Francis

The Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth gives thanks to God for guiding the College of Cardinals and granting them wisdom in selecting our new shepherd, Pope Francis.

In the Gospel of St. Matthew 18:16, we read: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”  It is upon this promise of Jesus Christ that we pray that the Holy Spirit give Pope Francis the necessary wisdom to guide the Church in the midst of the world. We look forward to Pope Francis leading all Catholics and people of good will, in celebration of God’s greatest gift to mankind, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ his son, during the Easter observances to come.

The Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth is committed to the New Evangelization, as we are blessed to live in Texas where Catholicism is growing. We look toward to the day when Pope Francis will name a new bishop to shepherd our diocese and to lead us on the path to holiness.

I ask all people within the Diocese of Fort Worth to join me in a prayer of thanksgiving for God’s goodness in giving us Pope Francis.  May the Holy Spirit pour out his blessing and assistance upon him and us, for the good of the entire Church.
